My Expression

Music is a unique tool of expression for me which continues to allow me to synthesize my multicultural background as an Indian-American living in Germany and use my Engineering skills to create innovative instruments.

I have performed and recorded with some of the world’s outstanding musicians from many genres including improvised music and jazz, classical, contemporary and Indian music such as Paul Lovens (Hatology CD Orka), Contemporary Music Cellist Rohan de Saram ( Sounding Buildings DVD), and South Indian master percussionist Trichy Sankaran (Innovative Music Meeting CD). Some of the awards I have received include the Eloranta award from MIT, an Irish Arts council award to work with Irish sound artists in Cork, Ireland, and a Senior Creative Arts Fellowship Award from the American Institute of Indian Studies to work with South Indian Musicians guided by the great Carnatic singer Aruna Sairam in Chennai, India.

I'm thrilled to share my latest record releases, including the CD 'Malagasy Breath' with my Sky Cage Quartet on Subcontinental Records, featuring the extraordinary singing of Madagascan lemurs called Indri. Additionally explore the Vinyl EP 'Naga 7,' one of the solos on it titled 'Naga Red,' which is also the name of the music video directed by Suhfecto featuring Shivani Chakkarwar recently featured in the Rolling Stone magazine. Join me on this musical odyssey, where innovation meets the enchanting melodies of nature.

Music is a source of boundless spiritual energy and with proper handling , this “energy of musicality” can be harnessed to bring performers and audience together in a form of communion that was traditionally the domain of religion.

Sky Cage QuarteT

I formed the Sky Cage quartet during the Corona pandemic commissioned by the Moers Festival to form a group to perform in their Festival 2020. I decided to bring an ensemble of musicians together with whom I had worked individually in the past.

Chad Popple performed in my CD release concert of Reconfigurations at the Wiener Konzerthaus in 2000; Keith O’Brien performed in my Music and Architecture project Sounding Buildings at the Lewis Glucksman Gallery in 2005 in Cork, Ireland and Georges and I performed together in the Weissenhorn Klassik Festival in 2018. Keith and Georges live in Berlin, Chad lives in Hamburg, and I currently live in Duisburg.

Despite the distances, we managed to have multiple virtual exchanges since April 2000 to rehearse my graphical drawing “Sky Cage” after which the group is named, for the Moers Festival 2020 (live-streamed by Arte concert). That live concert in Moers was also chosen by WDR3 for a radio broadcast in 2020. We also did the same thing for my piece revolving around the theme of racism in “Black Fractions” which premiered in the Global Trumpets Festival at Folkwang University in 2021.

Our latest 2023 CD “Malagasy Breath” is released on Subcontinental Records featuring the singing of the Indri lemurs of Madagascar. This was supported by a developmental grant from MusikFonds e.V. Berlin.
